Why use LEDs?

• High efficiency white LEDs are far more efficient than torch / flashlight bulbs. A white LED can give 6-8x more useable light than filament flashlight bulbs, especially when the light is needed in one direction.
• Filament lamps quickly fade out when the battery begins to drain. White LEDs with Linverter will continue to give light down to 0.8v, making use of all available battery power and giving good warning of flattening batteries
• Filament lamps have a rated life of 500-5000 hours. However, when used in battery applications such as flashlights, they are over-run to offset bulb life against battery life. When used in such applications, their life can be as little as 10 hours. On the other hand, LEDs have a life expectancy of around 100,000 hours.
• Filament lamps are notoriously fragile, especially when on. If you drop a filament lamp flashlight when powered by fresh batteries, you would expect the filament to break. LEDs don't use filaments. They are solid blocks of pastic with a solid chip inside, much like a transistor or ordinary diode. They are therefore very resistant to shock, vibration, pressure or other forms of physical damage. (They are, however, very sensitive to soldering heat!)

Solar powered lighting

Solar cells produce around 0.45v. Great savings can be made by using a lighting circuit which can operate as very low voltages. 4 100ma solar cells wired in series,charging a single AA NiMH 1.25v battery (charging voltage around 1.45v) will provide enough power in 8 hours of daylight to power 4 white LEDs for 26 hours through Linverter.

Wearable lights

Power ultraviolet or a range of coloured phosphor based LEDs from a small standard AAA, AA, C or D flashlight cell. Just one cell is small eough to hide in the hem of a garment or inconspicuously under a hat. Create interesting new garment effects.

Integrated cycle lamps

Do away with separate cycle lamps which can easily be removed, stolen or forgotten. Build long life, superbright LEDs into the frame where they will never be forgotten or stolen. Fit superbright LEDs powered by Linverter at the extremities of the frame, on each side of the back wheel, into the pedals, ends of the handlebars, making an interesting night-time effect and making yourself more visible, adding to road safety.

Helmet lamps

A single AAa cell can easily be hidden in a safe place in a helmet. Make sure any cell or other fitments in a helmet are positioned such that if an accident occurs, the helmet's safety function is not compromised. Helmet lights can help locate mountaineers, hill walkers, cavers and help light the way. Four superbright LEDs with Linverter powered by 2 cells is bright enough to light the way. 4 LEDs powered by a 1.5v cell and Linverter can be seen from a great distance.

How do I build Linverter?

Linverter is supplied as a kit of electronic components, circuit board and instructions. To build the kit successfully, you need some electronics soldering experience. If you can't solder, maybe you have a friend who can help.
The Linverter kit is available with or without LEDs. The LEDs are also available separately. Simply select which option you want in the table above, either Paypal or Nochex.
